High water on Kennicott, Chitina, and Copper Rivers
Use caution near the Kennicott, Chitina, and Copper Rivers as the Kennicott River rises. - Rangers observed new, significant water releases next to the Kennicott Glacier and into the Kennicott River; the annual Hidden Creek Lake glacial outburst flood (jökulhlaup) contributes to the rise when water drains beneath or through the glacier, and recent rain may increase hazards. - High water can be dangerous for visitors on the Kennicott River and downstream on the Chitina and Copper Rivers, including backcountry travelers and boaters. - Before crossing, consider lower-flow times such as early morning, appropriate crossing locations and methods, foot protection, preparation to get wet, and a self-rescue plan. Hypothermia is possible after brief submersion; if recreating on or in the water, consider a drysuit and personal flotation device (PFD). Check current trail and water conditions before traveling or recreating near these waterways.
