Trail guide
Bechler Falls Trail is a 2.6-mile out-and-back from the Cave Falls parking area. It follows Falls River through the trees, passes several small cascades, reaches the confluence with Bechler River, and then follows that river to Bechler Falls. The distance includes the return to the lot; the mapped line shows the one-way corridor once. Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours. This is a mellow way to spend part of a day by the water, rather than a strenuous climb or a towering waterfall.
The path starts on the northeast side of the parking area, opposite the restrooms, then follows the tree-lined bank. Small cascades appear along Falls River before the confluence. Past it, the trail rises gently through forest beside Bechler River and sometimes swings away from the bank while keeping river views. Turn around at the falls and retrace the same corridor.
The falls are a fast chute over dark rock, estimated at about 15 feet—more cascade than sheer drop. A small meadow opens about 100 yards beyond if you want to walk a little farther; count that as extra distance beyond the 2.6-mile core. For a photo, frame the whitewater against the dark ledges and evergreen bank.
A separate 7.5-mile loop continues via Bechler River Cutoff to Bechler Ranger Station and returns on South Boundary Trail. That is a longer route choice, not part of this trail's 2.6-mile out-and-back.
Drive to the parking area at the end of Cave Falls Road. Restrooms are reported at the lot, but food and potable water were not confirmed there, so bring what you need. Pets are not allowed on Yellowstone hiking trails; service animals are exempt. Snow and high water can delay Bechler backcountry access in spring and early summer, so check current conditions before setting out.
