Awaroa Old School Site is the trace of a rural school on a bush-covered terrace above the Awaroa River and estuary. The schoolhouse is gone; a chimney or fireplace and scattered iron relics are what visitors find. Add it to a wider walk among Awaroa’s historic sites if you enjoy small traces of settlement; it is reached as part of a wider walk, not a roadside stop.

Field reports describe swampy patches, estuary-side walking and river crossings on routes between Awaroa’s historic sites. The Coast Track crossing at Awaroa Inlet is daylight-only, from 1 hour 30 minutes before to 2 hours after low tide, so check tide tables before planning that route. DOC describes the last 12 km of the Awaroa road approach from Tākaka as rough, unsealed and prone to flooding, and does not recommend it as a park entrance. Bring food and water; no facilities are documented at the school site.
A school at the head of the inletThe school opened in 1890.
The school opened in 1890. Some pupils reached lessons by ferry timed to the tide; others followed a benched cart track. During a teacher shortage in World War I, 16-year-old Ella Flower taught here while boarding with local families and continuing her studies by correspondence.
When the school closedThe roll had fallen to four by 1931, and the school did not reopen after Christmas.
The roll had fallen to four by 1931, and the school did not reopen after Christmas. Rangers found the overgrown building in 1962 while cutting track, with the attendance register still open on the teacher’s desk. It burned around 1969. Today’s chimney, fireplace and iron fragments are small reminders of a school once central to the scattered Awaroa community.
