Overview
Bark Bay Hut is a 34‑bunk stop on the Abel Tasman Coast Track with classic hut charm and a prime coastal setting near the estuary and beach. It’s fully insulated and double‑glazed, so it feels snug once the wood burner is going.
Getting There
On foot, it’s roughly 3 hours from Anchorage via the low‑tide crossing (about 8.4 km) or 4 hours via the high‑tide track (about 11.5 km). From Awaroa Hut, plan on about 4.5 hours (13.5 km). You can also arrive by water taxi if you want to shorten the walk.
Facilities
- Sleeping: three bunkrooms (total 34 spaces), including a smaller 6‑bunk room that was once the warden’s quarters.
- Living: a large communal area with two big tables and plenty of bench seating; drying line outside.
- Water & toilets: filtered tap water inside; flush toilets in a separate ablutions block; cold‑water shower.
- Heating: wood burner with a woodshed.
Cooking and Lighting
There are no gas cooking facilities provided—bring your own stove and fuel. Solar LED lights have been observed in the living area, but you shouldn’t rely on them; pack a headlamp or other light.

This is a Great Walk hut and must be booked in advance; Backcountry Hut Passes/Tickets aren’t valid. Example fee bands (per person, per night):

- May–Jun and Sep: Adult $42
- Jul–Aug: Adult $33

What to Expect
It’s a social hut with side‑by‑side mattress platforms—great for meeting other walkers, less great if you crave personal space. The common room is the star: spacious, warm once the fire’s going, and perfect for drying out and swapping track stories. The beach is an easy wander from the hut (about a few minutes), so a quick dip is very doable in warmer months.
Best Time to Visit
October–April is peak season with higher fees and more demand—book early. Outside those months the hut feels calmer and roomier. Aim to reach mid‑afternoon to claim adjacent mattresses and settle in before dusk, and plan your approach around the low‑tide option from Anchorage to save time and distance.
