Best time to go

The trailhead lot is on the south side of the Trans-Canada Highway west of Banff. It holds about 20 vehicles and can fill on sunny summer days; use designated spaces, since roadside parking is prohibited. A toilet and trail map are available at the trailhead, but food service on the route was not found. Dogs are allowed on Banff summer trails unless a posted restriction says otherwise; keep them leashed and under control. High elevation can leave snow into early June or bring it back in October; the usual hiking window is mid-June to mid-September.

Safety

Above Bourgeau Lake, the route crosses steep, loose scree. Near the summit the path fades across a false summit and exposed ridge, so route-finding and secure footing matter. The full outing is very strenuous, and early or late season snow can obscure the upper tread.

Hiking Mount Bourgeau Trail

A full day for the summitMount Bourgeau Trail is a long out-and-back from Bourgeau Lake Trailhead to Mount Bourgeau’s…

Mount Bourgeau Trail is a long out-and-back from Bourgeau Lake Trailhead to Mount Bourgeau’s 2,931 m summit, passing Bourgeau Lake and Harvey Pass. The mapped trail corridor covers about 13.84 miles round trip, with roughly 1,730 m of climbing. Allow about eight hours; five to ten is a sensible window depending on pace and time above the lake. This is for hikers who want a long, high day and have the legs and daylight for it. The lake and Harvey Pass are good turnarounds; you don’t need to reach the summit to get a rewarding walk.

The forest approachThe trail starts in forest on a broad, maintained track that climbs gradually for roughly 6 km.

The trail starts in forest on a broad, maintained track that climbs gradually for roughly 6 km. Several creeks cross it, including Wolverine Creek, which has a bridge. There’s little of the big view early on, so settle into a steady uphill rhythm. Around 5.4 km from the start, a waterfall makes a good pause before switchbacks bring you into a more open, marshy approach to Bourgeau Lake.

Bourgeau Lake and Harvey PassThe lake sits in a steep rocky basin and is a natural halfway payoff.

The lake sits in a steep rocky basin and is a natural halfway payoff. If that’s enough for a day, the shorter lake out-and-back is about 8.6 miles round trip. The summit route keeps climbing above the lake on steeper switchbacks across open scree, with two small tarns on the way toward Harvey Pass. Loose rock makes this upper descent slower and less secure than the forest approach. At the pass, Sunshine Village comes into view; it’s a good place to decide whether the final ridge is right for you.

The summit ridgeFrom Harvey Pass, the summit is still a separate high-alpine push.

From Harvey Pass, the summit is still a separate high-alpine push. The path fades near a false summit, and the last ridge is exposed; sources disagree about whether the final steps count as an easy scramble. Expect route-finding over rough ground rather than a clearly marked path. The summit sits at 2,931 m and has a repeater station. A clearer panorama is reported from the southeast ridge, with Mount Ball to the west and Mount Assiniboine on the distant skyline in clear weather. For a defining view, look back across Bourgeau Lake and its cliffs from the upper trail, or frame the wide view from the southeast ridge.

Small things to look forA trip report notes a hoary marmot foraging near Harvey Pass and glacier lilies along the route.

A trip report notes a hoary marmot foraging near Harvey Pass and glacier lilies along the route. Treat those as possibilities, not guaranteed sightings; the flowers are a seasonal alpine detail rather than a dependable stop.
