Parking

There is no parking or roadhead at either endpoint. Reach Egypt Lake Campground via the Sunshine Village–Healy Pass backcountry approach, then continue to Ball Pass Junction Campground. If doing the full Sunshine–Vista Lake traverse, plan around seasonal Sunshine lift/shuttle access and arrange a return from Vista Lake; no public shuttle back is listed.

Safety

The route crosses a high pass near 2,300 m, with steep grades and rapidly changing mountain weather. Snow can make the pass difficult well into early summer. There is no road exit between the campgrounds.

Whistling Pass Trail is an 8.6 km (5.3 mi) point-to-point leg of the Great Divide Trail, from Egypt Lake Campground (E13) to Ball Pass Junction Campground (Re21). It climbs through Whistling Valley, crosses the pass near 2,300 m, then drops to the second camp. Allow four to five hours on the trail with an overnight pack. The full Sunshine–Vista Lake traverse is 41.5 km; this row covers only its Egypt Lake–Ball Pass Junction leg. The mapped tread measures 8.6 km, though trip descriptions round the camp-to-camp day to about 10 km, so budget for the longer figure when planning a loaded-pack day.

From Egypt Lake the trail rises past Haiduk Lake, with the pass visible ahead in places. Views come and go as the path climbs through open alpine ground; the upper tread gets rockier and the ascent is steep in sections. Snow can linger on high passes into late June, and snow is possible at elevation even in summer.

At Whistling Pass, look back toward Haiduk Lake and the valley you climbed, then turn toward the Ball Range. Hoary marmots may whistle from the open slopes. The route descends from the pass to Ball Pass Junction Campground; keep time and leg strength for the full descent. For a photo that shows both the crossing and its scale, include a strip of rocky tread below the Ball Range rather than framing only the skyline.

This is not a road-access day hike: both endpoints are backcountry campgrounds, and the through-route continues from Ball Pass Junction toward Twin Lakes. Backcountry camping requires a permit and campground reservation. Sunshine access is seasonal and can involve a fee-based gondola and shuttle to Healy Pass; the full through-hike has no public return shuttle from Vista Lake, so arrange transport before setting out. Dogs are normally allowed on summer trails on leash unless a current trail restriction says otherwise; dogs cannot enter backcountry shelters.
