Overview

Haus der Berge is the park’s flagship hub—a smart first stop whether skies are blue or socked‑in. The free foyer sets the scene with park info and a small cinema, while the paid “Vertical Wilderness” exhibition walks you from lake to summit through the park’s four habitats. Plan about three hours if you want to do it justice.

What You’ll See

• “Vertical Wilderness” (paid): a 1,000 m², walk‑through journey from Königssee’s waters up to alpine rock, complete with a 12‑minute large‑screen nature film inside the rock habitat.
• Free zones: a spacious foyer with changing mini‑exhibitions and a cinema showing nature films.
• Outdoor panorama path: a loop that lets you touch the materials and plants of water, forest, alpine pasture, and rock—plus views toward Watzmann, Hochkalter, and Jenner when the weather cooperates.
• Extras: a themed library/meeting rooms upstairs and a good on‑site restaurant.

Wildlife & Stories Inside

Audio guides (free) thread the exhibits with animal tales—think lake trout, marmot, raven, chamois/ibex, deer—and a “Man & Nature” route. There’s also a kid‑friendly tour for ages 6–12 with a dozen quick stations.

Practicalities

• Hours: daily 9:00–17:00; last admission to “Vertical Wilderness” at 16:00.
• Prices (Vertical Wilderness): Adults €4; Children 6–16 €2; Families €10; Infants to 5 free; Visitors with disabilities €3.50; school classes free. Some local cards get small discounts.
• Lockers available. Dogs are welcome in the foyer, temporary exhibitions, outdoor areas, and restaurant, but not inside “Vertical Wilderness.” Three extra‑large dog crates are at the parking area (keys at the info desk; deposit; water provided).
• Note for November 2025: the main exhibition was closed Nov 10–21, 2025, and the restaurant closed through Nov 30, 2025; other areas remained open 9:00–17:00.

Is It Worth Your Time?

Yes—especially if you want context before hitting trails or you’re navigating a rainy day. The habitat storytelling is thoughtful rather than gimmicky, and the outdoor path adds real sense‑of‑place when the clouds lift.

Best Time to Visit

• To dodge lines (worst on rainy high‑season days), come before 10:00 or after 14:00.
• For mountain views on the panorama path, pick a clear day; mornings typically offer steadier conditions.
• Remember last entry to the paid exhibit is 16:00; start by 15:00 if you want it unrushed.

Food & Facilities

There’s a restaurant you can access without an exhibit ticket, plus modern restrooms. Parking is nearby. Staff at the info desk are excellent at tailoring hiking ideas to your time and interests.
