Halsalm

Overview

Halsalm is a classic alpine pasture perched above Hintersee with big lake-and-peak views and a small, no-frills hut. It’s the kind of spot that feels earned: a steady climb through forest and meadow, then benches-in-the-grass with grazing cattle and simple, satisfying food.

The Hike

You’ve got two solid options:

• Out-and-back: about 5.8 km with roughly 377 m of gain (plan 2.5–3 hours). The path is steady and sometimes steep, with a few rocky bits.
• Loop from Hintersee/Klausbachhaus: roughly 8.4 km, ~449 m of gain, 3–3.5 hours. Many hikers favor this for variety; the descent is a true mountain path and can be demanding when wet.

Approaches vary in character: a direct, steeper path or a wider, more leisurely route—both worthwhile. Expect surefooted walking; it’s not stroller-friendly and can be tough for small kids.

On the Alm

The hut is tiny, traditional, and refreshingly down-to-earth. Order at the door, then tuck into local staples—think tangy buttermilk, cheese-and-bacon bread, and other simple snacks—at fair prices. In summer the pasture is actively managed, so you’ll likely be sharing the meadow with cattle.

Nature and Wildlife

This area sits on a popular “Eagle’s Tour” route, and hikers occasionally glimpse golden eagles. Reviewers also mention chances to spot wildlife along the way. As always, keep dogs leashed, give livestock space, and stay on marked trails.

Geology Snapshot

You’re walking in the Northern Limestone Alps on layers born from the ancient Tethys Ocean. Rubble-prone Ramsau dolomite forms the lower slopes, while massive Dachstein limestone builds the big walls and plateaus above—sometimes preserving megalodont (giant bivalve) fossils.

Facilities and Logistics

• Restrooms: In the park, toilets are generally only in huts. When the hut is open, expect guest toilets; otherwise, use public toilets at Hintersee before you start.
• Water: No public fountains noted—carry what you need.
• Access: For the loop, start at the Hintersee National Park Information point (Klausbachhaus) with paid parking. For the shorter out-and-back, begin near Triebenbachstraße; there’s also a bus stop named "Halsalm."

Best Time to Visit

Aim for clear weather—the views are the payoff here. Summer is prime if you want the hut open and the full alpine pasture vibe. After rain, avoid the steeper, red-marked descent as it can be slick.
