Halsalm

Halsalm is a small alpine pasture and hut above Hintersee, tucked under the southeast cliffs of the Reiter Alm. It’s worth the climb if you want a real mountain walk ending in a working pasture, a rustic hut, and a wide view across the lake and Ramsau valley. This is a hike-in destination, not a quick lakeside detour.

From the national park information point at Klausbachhaus, follow the road for about 350 m, then turn right onto the signed trail. It climbs steadily through mountain forest to the pasture. From the hut, the park’s loop crosses a narrow track over the meadow, descends on trail 63 toward Fernsebner parking, then follows a footpath beside the road back to Klausbachhaus; you can also return the way you came. Allow a half day. The uphill is continuous, and the loop’s meadow traverse is narrow, so this is a proper walk rather than a gentle stroll from the lakeshore.

The Almkreuz gives the main payoff: a steep look down to Hintersee, with the Ramsau valley beyond. Leave some meadow in the frame so the drop to the lake stays clear. The viewpoint is part of the hike, not a roadside pull-off.

The Lacklehen farming family from Ramsau still manages the alp, where cattle graze in summer. When the hut is serving, expect a simple stop with local specialties, including homemade cheese and drinks. Service is seasonal, so check before making it your only food plan.

The timber hut is a protected monument, and its roof ridge beam bears the date 1896. It’s part of a living alpine farm, not a replica or exhibit; centuries of summer grazing have shaped the open pastures in this valley.

Several pairs of golden eagles nest in the cliffs around Halsalm, which is why Klausbach Valley is also known as the Valley of the Eagles. A trail-side observation point looks toward Knittelhorn, where a bearded-vulture release project began in 2021. It’s a good place to watch the sky, though seeing a bird is never guaranteed.
