Klausbachhaus is a listed former alpine farmhouse now serving as the national park’s information center and an interactive museum at the entrance to Klausbach Valley. It’s a useful stop before choosing a walk: trails from here lead toward Bindalm and Ragertalm, and the AlmErlebnisBus runs toward Hirschbichl and across the Austrian border. There’s also an easy outing to the golden-eagle observatory nearby.

The permanent exhibition, “1,000 Years of Ups and Downs,” follows the seasonal movement of herders and livestock between valley farms and high pastures. The lower floor looks at how people shaped these meadows and kept older livestock breeds; upstairs turns to alpine plants, insects and spiders, nocturnal wildlife, golden eagles and changing landscapes. A virtual account from a former alpine farmer and a 12-minute film about the pastures through the seasons bring the story to life.

The grounds have a traditional farm garden and a sensory garden with a barefoot path and sound stations. A barrier-free circular path starts at the center, so you can stretch your legs without committing to a valley hike.

A good place to look for golden eaglesA level, easy walk of about 20 minutes reaches the golden-eagle observatory.

A level, easy walk of about 20 minutes reaches the golden-eagle observatory. One of the national park’s four eagle pairs lives in Klausbach Valley, which the park describes as its best area for a chance to see golden eagles. Sightings still depend on luck and weather. The separate Halsgrube station is farther away, about an hour on a trail with some steep climbs.
