Trail guide
The Klausbachtal – Hirschbichl – Weißbach Trail is a 14 km (8.7-mile) one-way hike from Klausbachhaus at Hintersee to Weißbach in Austria. It climbs about 380 m (1,250 ft) and descends 520 m (1,705 ft); allow four to five hours on foot, plus time for a return ride. Follow AV 481 up the valley, pass the suspension bridge and Bindalm, cross Hirschbichl Pass, then descend to the village. This is the full valley crossing, not the shorter walk to Bindalm and back. Arrange a pickup or check that the seasonal AlmErlebnisBus fits your day.
The walk starts gently beside the Klausbach, through pasture and light mixed woodland. Farther up, it gets steeper through conifer forest, with springs and several mountain-stream crossings. Hikers and mountain bikers share parts of the corridor, and the road also carries the AlmErlebnisBus, so stay on the signed footpath.
The suspension bridge crosses the Klausbach beneath the steep rock faces of the Ramsau Dolomites. It is the route’s most striking viewpoint; frame the bridge with the cliffs behind it. Beyond it, Bindalm’s protected historic huts sit in open pasture with views toward Reiter Alm. Give this stretch a little time rather than treating it as a quick pass-through.
The path continues from Bindalm to the border crossing and Gasthof Hirschbichl. The pass lies on an old salt-trading corridor: for centuries, pack animals carried salt from Berchtesgaden into the Pinzgau. From the pass the route continues down to Weißbach. Gasthof Hirschbichl is the main meal stop, but alpine food service is seasonal, so check locally before counting on it.
This route ends far from its start. The seasonal AlmErlebnisBus connects Hintersee, Hirschbichl and Weißbach and can shorten or simplify the logistics, but confirm its current timetable before setting out. Dogs are allowed on the walk and must stay leashed; a muzzle is required on the bus. Carry what you need for the full crossing, since the route description does not confirm dependable water or toilet stops.
