More about Klausbachtal Red Deer Feeding

A winter wildlife stopKlausbachtal’s red deer feeding station is a seasonal wildlife-viewing area in Berchtesgaden…

Klausbachtal’s red deer feeding station is a seasonal wildlife-viewing area in Berchtesgaden National Park. A raised platform looks over feed racks in a snowy valley clearing, where red deer gather when the herd comes down from the forest. Check the day’s feeding time at Klausbachhaus and leave time to wait. The animals do not arrive on cue, and visitors who come too early may see none.

Getting to the viewing platformA mostly level valley path with firm sandy sections leads from Klausbachhaus toward the feeding…

A mostly level valley path with firm sandy sections leads from Klausbachhaus toward the feeding area, and the trail is cleared in winter. A horse-drawn carriage also runs to the station in winter; it takes about 20 minutes, with advance booking. The viewing platform’s ramp is about two meters wide and has a maximum 6% incline, though barrier-free access depends on snow conditions. Public accessible restrooms and a bus stop are near Klausbachhaus at the valley entrance.

Why the park feeds the herdThe winter area covers about 45 hectares.

The winter area covers about 45 hectares. Roads and settlements have interrupted the red deer’s traditional winter migration to lower elevations, so the park feeds the herd here to limit browsing and bark stripping in sensitive mountain forest. The deer enter the enclosure on their own; rangers close its gates after the herd arrives and reopen 25 gates in spring.
