Watzmannhaus

Watzmannhaus is a staffed Alpine Club hut perched at 1,930 m on Falzköpfl, just below Hocheck. It’s a tough day-hike destination and an overnight base for Watzmann tours, not a roadside stop. Go if you want a full mountain day; it’s a poor fit if you have only a spare hour.

The usual route, trail 441, climbs through forest past Stubenalm and Mitterkaseralm, then opens onto Falzalm before the final climb to the hut. The out-and-back is about 14.6 km, around 1,300 m of climbing and roughly seven hours. Bus 846 serves Wimbachbrücke, where the walk starts; there’s no road to the hut.

The hut serves regional meals, and Kaiserschmarrn is a favorite to look for. It has 160 beds in shared rooms and dormitories; reserve online and bring a hut sleeping bag. There are no showers. The usual staffed season runs from around mid-May to mid-October, weather permitting, so check the current hut and trail notices before setting out.

The Munich Alpine Club section built the hut in 1888 with 25 beds for climbers tackling the Watzmann. It has grown into a much larger base, but it’s still where the day hike and serious alpine plans meet.

Hocheck is another 2.5–3 hours above the hut. The exposed Watzmann traverse starts there and is for highly experienced mountaineers; the hut hike itself doesn’t mean you’re ready for it. The open stretch over Falzalm is the photo stop: the hut sits against the ridge with Hoher Göll across the valley.
