Mitterkaseralm via Stubenalm is a roughly 5.8-mile (9.3 km) out-and-back from Wimbachbrücke on Alpine Club Trail 441. Climb about 2,600 feet (790 m) over 2.9 miles to the staffed alpine pasture, then return the same way. Allow four to five hours with a proper stop. It is a sustained, strenuous climb, but the payoff is a high pasture beneath the Watzmann, with Watzmannhaus visible above. Come for a real mountain outing; if you want less climbing, Stubenalm is a sensible earlier turnaround.

From the Wimbachbrücke parking area, cross the bridge and keep right on the signed route toward Watzmannhaus. The path reaches a forest road about 500 meters in; take the right at the second junction roughly 200 meters farther on. The climb continues through mountain forest to Stubenalm, then follows a more open path to Mitterkaseralm. Return on the same track. A separate approach from Hammerstiel comes in via Schapbachalm; it is a different outing and is not included in these figures. Dogs are allowed in the national park but must stay on a lead.

Stop at the hutMitterkaseralm sits at about 1,410 meters below Falzköpfl.

Mitterkaseralm sits at about 1,410 meters below Falzköpfl. This is the turnaround for this route; the path continues beyond the hut toward Falzalm and Watzmannhaus, but those higher miles are a much longer hike. When it is serving visitors, the hut is a welcome place for homemade cake or Kaspressknödel soup. Its service is seasonal, so check the current opening dates before planning a meal.

A small forest-climate stationAt the upper edge of the pasture, a forest-climate station sits in a larch stand.

At the upper edge of the pasture, a forest-climate station sits in a larch stand. It is the only Level II monitoring site in Europe located in larch forest and has around 120 species of vascular plants and mosses. It is a neat bit of science tucked into the alpine pasture, beyond the usual hut-and-view reward.
