Sitting around milepost 364.5 about 20 miles north of Asheville, Craggy Gardens pairs a small, historic visitor center with some of the Parkway’s most dramatic, high-elevation scenery. The ridgeline here is all twisted trees, open balds, and huge sky—prime for 360-degree vistas and that famous June flush of Catawba rhododendron.

The environment at roughly 5,500 feet feels different from the rest of the Parkway—gnarled, wind-shaped shrubs, open “garden” balds, and quick-shifting weather that can go from bluebird to fog in minutes. The visitor center is small with basic exhibits and an America’s National Parks store for maps and souvenirs. A project to add year-round, permanent restrooms at the visitor center and the Craggy Pinnacle parking lot is planned for 2025–2026.
