Craggy Gardens Trail

Begin at the signed trailhead at the south end of the Craggy Gardens Visitor Center parking area. Follow the trail about 0.3 mile uphill to the CCC-built shelter and rhododendron bald, then continue along the main trail as it descends gradually through mixed-hardwood forest to the north end of the Craggy Gardens Picnic Area at Milepost 367.6. The mapped walking corridor is about 0.74 mile one way; Parkwolf stores that physical corridor once while length reflects the approximately 1.6-mile round trip. A short side path near the picnic-area side leads to a gazebo and is not part of this main trail line. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail overlaps this route, so stay on the signed Craggy Gardens Trail rather than taking the fork toward Douglas Falls or other spurs.

Rhododendron, wildflowers, blueberries, and an open bald surround the shelter area, with views toward the Black Mountain Range and the valley. The route is popular during the June rhododendron bloom and on fair-weather weekends. Expect roots and rocky sections after the initial parking-area approach, plus quickly changing high-elevation weather that can bring fog and chill.

The primary start is the visitor-center parking-area trailhead. The route can also be reached from the far corner of the Craggy Gardens Picnic Area parking lot, where access is via steps; hikers using the standard out-and-back should return to their chosen start. Stay on marked trails to protect fragile high-elevation plants.
