Set at milepost 367.6, Craggy Gardens Picnic Area sits high on the Parkway (around 5,200 feet) in a lush mix of rhododendron, laurel, and birch. It’s a legit picnic destination and a practical trailhead rolled into one—perfect for pairing lunch with a short hike and big mountain atmosphere.

Why it’s worth a stop

• Tables are scattered in shade and on open hillsides, many with grills. It stays noticeably cooler up here than in Asheville below, a summer gift.
• When the Catawba rhododendrons erupt in June, the surrounding slopes glow purple. Later, wildflowers linger through summer, and fall color can be fantastic.

Trails and what you’ll see

• From the picnic area, the Craggy Gardens Trail climbs past a stone shelter to the “gardens” above and ultimately toward the seasonal visitor center. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail also passes through, so you can make this a longer wander if you want.
• Expect shifting mountain views—sometimes clear and sweeping, sometimes wrapped in dramatic fog. A short climb from the lot leads to overlooks with rewarding vistas.
