Peaks of Otter Campground

Overview

A classic Blue Ridge Parkway basecamp at milepost ~86, Peaks of Otter Campground drops you right into the heart of the Peaks of Otter area—think mountain views, a peaceful lakeside stroll, and trailheads within minutes. It’s also a rare Parkway campground that’s an easy walk from a full-service lodge and restaurant.

Campsites & Facilities

There are roughly 144 sites across multiple loops (A often suits RVs, B fits vans/smaller rigs, C is popular with tent campers). Expect flush restrooms with running water and potable water spigots around the loops, plus picnic tables and fire rings at sites. There are no electric or water hookups, no showers, and no dump station. Cell service is weak to non-existent in the campground itself.

What Makes It Stand Out

Location. You can stroll to Peaks of Otter Lodge for a meal or a coffee, then wander the one‑mile paved path around Abbott Lake at sunset with Sharp Top looming above. Hiking is the headliner here, with Sharp Top, Flat Top, and Harkening Hill all close by.

Things to Do

• Abbott Lake loop: a mellow, scenic mile with frequent wildlife and wildflowers.
• Hiking: tackle Sharp Top for big views, or mix in Flat Top and Harkening Hill for a quieter feel.
• Fishing: Abbott Lake offers catch-and-release smallmouth bass along with bluegill and bullhead catfish.

Wildlife

Deer are common around dusk, and black bears do roam the area. Follow posted food storage rules and keep a clean camp—rangers enforce bear protocols for everyone’s safety. Birding can be surprisingly good around the lake and meadows.

Best Time to Visit

• Fall foliage weekends are gorgeous and busy—reserve early or arrive midweek.
• Spring brings wildflowers and cooler temps; summer nights can still feel chilly at elevation.
• For photos, aim for golden hour around Abbott Lake; sunsets over Sharp Top are especially nice.

Logistics

Reservations and details are handled seasonally via Recreation.gov. Vehicle limits and on-pavement parking rules are enforced. Hammocks are permitted when you follow posted regulations.
