Overview
Tucked at Milepost 85.6 near Peaks of Otter, Polly Woods Ordinary is a small, historic log cabin that once served as an "ordinary"—a simple inn for travelers in the early-to-mid 1800s. It’s one of the Parkway’s most authentic-feeling historic structures, the kind that instantly transports you to the rough-and-ready lodging days of the turnpike era.
Why it matters
Run by Widow Polly Wood, this was the first public accommodation in the Peaks of Otter area, serving folks along the old Buchanan–Liberty turnpike from the early 1830s through the 1850s. When Abbott Lake was built, the National Park Service reassembled the cabin a few hundred yards from its original location in 1964 to preserve it.
What you’ll see
You’ll view the exterior of a compact log cabin, with well-done interpretive panels that explain its role in 19th-century travel. The setting is photogenic—mountain backdrop, lakeside landscape, and that classic hand-hewn look that begs for a quick photo stop. There’s parking right at the site, and it functions as a convenient jumping-off point for nearby lakeside walks and area hikes.
Wildlife
This isn’t a wildlife hotspot, but the surrounding Peaks of Otter area often has deer, songbirds, small mammals, and occasional wild turkey. Abbott Lake nearby draws waterfowl and amphibians—worth a slow lap if you’re already here with binoculars.
Practicalities
Expect minimal amenities at the cabin itself: no restrooms, food, or store. The interior is normally closed, but rangers sometimes host open houses and programs where you can step inside and get more context. Otherwise, plan this as a short, informative stop that pairs well with a walk around Abbott Lake or bigger hikes to Sharp Top or Flat Top.
Best time to visit
It’s generally quiet outside peak travel times. If you want to see the interior, time your visit for occasional ranger-led open houses.
