Overview
Set between Sharp Top, Flat Top, and Harkening Hill, the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center is the hub of this whole area. It’s where you get your bearings, grab maps and advice, check out the exhibits, and step straight onto trails or down to scenic Abbott Lake. The lodge and restaurant sit right across the road, so everything you need is clustered in one easy stop.
Why stop here
Inside you’ll find a ranger-staffed information desk, a small nature museum-style exhibit area, restrooms, and a well-stocked bookstore/gift shop. Outside, there’s an amphitheater and immediate access to mellow walks or bigger climbs. If you only make one stop in the Peaks of Otter area, make it this one.
Trails and the Sharp Top shuttle
Trailheads for Harkening Hill and the Abbott Lake loop start right by the visitor center, with the steeper Sharp Top and longer Flat Top trails nearby. Prefer to skip some of the elevation? A seasonal shuttle runs close to the Sharp Top summit, dropping you within about 1,500 feet of the top—great for big views without the full grind.
Exhibits and wildlife
The exhibits cover local geology, human history, and the area’s standout flora, including wildflowers. Birders do well here: spring and fall bring neotropical songbirds, and Abbott Lake draws waterfowl during migration. Keep an eye out for white‑tailed deer, wild turkey, red fox, and, occasionally, black bear.

Peaks of Otter has been a travel corridor for thousands of years and a mountain hospitality destination since the 1830s. Those three peaks—Sharp Top, Flat Top, and Harkening Hill—frame the whole experience, with trails threading forests, meadows, and rocky outcrops.

- Mornings are best for parking, cooler temps, and calmer trails.
- Weekdays beat weekends; October foliage weekends are the busiest of the year.
- For photos, early and late light along Abbott Lake is reliably pretty; midday is fine for exhibits and planning.
- If you want the Sharp Top shuttle, go earlier in the day and verify it’s operating that day.
