Brooks Lookout

Overview

Brooks Lookout is a quiet viewpoint reached on foot in the southern part of the park. It rewards the short detour with broad views over the Bherwerre Peninsula and the wave‑cut rock platforms and cliffs along Jervis Bay.

What You’ll See

Expect expansive ocean vistas and a sweep of headland scenery. Birdlife is common in the surrounding coastal heath and scrub, and the nearshore waters below support rich marine life.

Getting There

Start at Steamers Beach car park on Stony Creek Road and follow the Headland/Circuit trail network. It’s about 1.4 km (around 30 minutes) from Steamers Beach to the lookout. Many walkers include the lookout as a stop on the longer Circuit Trail (about 11.4 km with side tracks to viewpoints and small beaches).

Facilities

You’ll find a single picnic table at the lookout. There are no toilets here; use facilities at main hubs such as Green Patch, Bristol Point, or the Botanic Gardens before you set out.

Geology and Landscape

The headlands expose Permian‑age sandstones, siltstones and conglomerates—the southern edge of the Sydney Basin. Inland, wind‑blown dunes and sandy soils dominate; along the coast, cliffs and marine platforms frame the views. These sandy soils are easily eroded, so staying on formed tracks matters.

Best Time to Visit

Pick a clear, calm day for the best visibility. The headland is exposed, and weather can change quickly—bring sun and wind protection and plenty of water. Check for any roadworks or temporary closures on Stony Creek Road before you go.

Is It Worth the Detour?

As a stand‑alone destination it’s modest; as a scenic pause on a Steamers/Headland/Circuit outing, it’s a lovely, peaceful perch that adds variety to the walk.
