Paria View

Paria View is a roadside overlook off the Bryce Point spur road, reached by a short paved path to a promontory above Yellow Creek. It looks across a different landscape from the park’s central amphitheater viewpoints. Come for the quieter stop and long view; if your time is tight, visitors tend to put Bryce’s headline overlooks first.

The short paved path leads directly to the viewpoint, and the National Park Service lists it as wheelchair accessible. No other trails start here. The road closes to vehicles in winter, when it is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

The overlook faces a more than 500-foot-deep amphitheater carved by the headwaters of Yellow Creek, which drains toward the Paria River. The valley opens beyond it, giving Paria View a more distant, layered outlook than the hoodoos close around the main amphitheater.

Look across Paria Valley toward the White Cliffs and, on a clear day, Navajo Mountain near Page, Arizona, more than 80 miles away. The distant cliffs and mountain are especially striking in evening light; foreground hoodoos give the view scale.

Yellow Creek has been cutting back into the Paunsaugunt Plateau for millions of years. Softer marine rock below the iron-rich limestone of the Claron Formation erodes first, undercutting the Pink Cliffs above. Instead of tapering into slopes like parts of Bryce Amphitheater, the cliff edge can break away in large slabs.

The view follows a regional sequence: shale-rich Grey Cliffs give way to the sandstones of the White Cliffs, then to paler Navajo Formation sandstone and deep canyons. Kodachrome State Park lies in the transition between the Grey and White Cliffs.

That far-off dome is a laccolith, not an erupted volcano. As the Colorado Plateau rose over the last 20 million years, molten rock pushed upward and bulged the overlying layers, then cooled underground. Its hard core remains visible as Navajo Mountain.
