Trail guide
This is the full Kingussie–Newtonmore loop, starting and finishing at Ardvonie Car Park in Kingussie. It climbs through woodland to Loch Gynack, crosses open moor toward Newtonmore, then returns beside the A86 on the cycle path. Allow about 3 hours for 7.1 miles and roughly 365 metres of ascent; the route is commonly estimated at 2.5–3.5 hours.
The first climb follows Gynack Road and a path through woodland. The tread is rough and can be muddy. Near the birches, the route reaches a view of Loch Gynack, then follows a path beside the water before climbing onto the moor.
The open hillside gives views toward Creag Dubh and the Monadhliath. Green markers help at first, but grassy paths become faint and route-finding less distinct beyond the plantation. Several burns cross the route; footbridges lie close to the described crossings. Carry a map and check the line before leaving the loch.
The moor crossing passes scant remains of a former community. Its name and date are not established in the available route information, so the remains are best treated as an unlabelled trace rather than a named historic site.
After the moorland section, the route reaches a minor road and joins the cycle path beside the A86 back toward Kingussie. Take care where the route meets the road, then follow the town-side access back to Ardvonie to close the loop.
