“Auchavan is coming up, the Glen Isla road end for the Monega Hill and Glas Maol circuit. That's a hard thirteen-mile day of seven to seven and a half hours, with exposed ground, unreliable paths and a boggy return.”

Hiking Monamenach from Auchavan

A short Corbett climbMonamenach from Auchavan is a 3.

Monamenach from Auchavan is a 3.25-mile out-and-back to the 807 m summit, with about 444 m of climbing. It is a compact but steep hill walk on an estate track and a faint upper path; allow 2–3 hours. Go for a quick Corbett and open hill views, not a gentle stroll.

The way upStart at the bridge over the River Isla at the end of the public road.

Start at the bridge over the River Isla at the end of the public road. The established walking itinerary follows the estate drive signed as the private drive to Tulchan Lodge; after the second cattle grid, leave it for the much fainter grassy track. Pass a gap in the dry-stone wall and cross the Glaick Burn. The climb is fairly steep, and the views open back toward Auchavan as you gain height.

Cairn and returnNear the bealach between Monamenach and Creagan Caise, take the rougher track climbing…

Near the bealach between Monamenach and Creagan Caise, take the rougher track climbing north-northwest to the summit. The slope eases near the top, where a small cairn stands beside remnants of an old fence. From here you can look toward the crags of Caenlochan Glen and south toward Mount Blair. Turn around at the summit and retrace the same route; continuing the ridge toward Creag Leacach and Glas Maol makes a much longer walk and is not part of this trail.
