Trail guide
Riverside Walk, Kincraig is a 2.7 km (1.75 mi) out-and-back to a bench clearing above the River Spey. Allow about an hour; the route has little climbing and winds through woodland before opening to river and Cairngorm views. The mapped corridor is about 1.16 km one way, a little shorter than half the published round-trip distance; follow the signed high path to the viewpoint. The optional Speyside Way return is a different variant and is not included here.
Start at the small village parking area by the phone box, near The Old Post Office Cafe. Walk up the road, turn onto Speybank Walk, then leave the wider track for the narrow signed path where it bends left. The high path runs beside the newer Speyside Way and the two meet more than once. Keep to the riverside line, avoid the faint left fork, cross a short boardwalk on the Speyside Way, then climb back up to the ridge. Pass a link path and bench, a gate and a cross-marked stone before reaching the viewpoint clearing and its wooden bench. Return the same way for the stated distance.
Birch and oak shade much of the walk, with heather and blaeberry along the ridge. Views down to the wide Spey and across the strath toward the Cairngorms come and go between the trees. The narrow path runs above steep riverbank sides in places; keep children close. A short steep climb leaves the boardwalk. Dogs are allowed; keep them close near wildlife or livestock and follow local signs.
Kincraig was once known as Boat of Insh, recalling the ferry that crossed here before the long bridge was built in 1874. The bridge at the north end of Loch Insh is a separate stop after the walk.
