This is an 8.9-mile round trip from the Green-Colorado River Trailhead in the Doll House area, usually about five hours of walking. The route follows the same approach out and back, with a reported 0.9-mile loop near the river rims. Beehive Arch, red-banded sandstone, and views toward both the Colorado and Green rivers make the long approach worthwhile if you want a remote, substantial hike.

Trail guide

Hiking Colorado and Green River Overlook Trail

Reaching the trailheadThe Doll House is deep in The Maze.

The Doll House is deep in The Maze. A park map estimates roughly six hours by backcountry road from Hans Flat, and all Maze backcountry roads require a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle. This is a major part of the outing, not a quick side trip. There is no food, gas or potable water in The Maze; stock up before leaving Hans Flat. Parking capacity and trailhead facilities have not been confirmed.

Through the Doll HouseThe walk begins among Cedar Mesa sandstone formations and winds through more rock clusters.

The walk begins among Cedar Mesa sandstone formations and winds through more rock clusters. Beehive Arch is on the route at about 0.8 mile. Farther on, the path passes cliffs and alcoves where flakes of flint have been reported; leave artifacts where they are. After another stretch, the trail reaches a meadow junction. The separate connector from there continues toward Shot and Water Canyons and Chimney Rock; that is a longer route, not part of this overlook hike.

The river views and the mapped lineA described 0.

A described 0.9-mile loop from the meadow visits both rims: one view looks toward the Colorado River from the western edge of its gorge, and the return arc bends west to a Green River overlook before dropping back to the meadow. The Colorado is reported to be about 400 yards away below the rim. The available mapped track supports the approach corridor but does not resolve the full viewpoint loop: its 4.58-mile line ends near the river-side area. Treat the line in the app as an incomplete representation of the reported walk, and confirm the loop on a detailed map before setting out.

Route finding and rulesA published trail description calls the route easy and well marked.

A published trail description calls the route easy and well marked. Park guidance for The Maze warns that trails can be steep, unmarked and minimally maintained, with difficult route finding; it does not say exactly how much that warning applies to this hike. Use a topographic map rather than relying on GPS, and ask at Hans Flat about the route and access before driving in. The district is remote and self-rescue may be necessary. Pets are not allowed on Canyonlands hiking trails.
