Gooseneck Overlook Trail

Overview

Locals often call this one the “Gooseneck Overlook,” but the signed route is the White Rim Overlook Trail in Island in the Sky. It’s an easy, mostly level out‑and‑back across sand and slickrock to a rim‑top perch with sweeping views of the Colorado River’s tight meanders and the broad White Rim bench. The hike is roughly 2.0 miles round trip (total), with modest ups and downs and about 150–200 feet of cumulative gain.

Trail Experience

From the White Rim Overlook Picnic Area, the path heads onto a narrowing promontory. Expect a mix of packed sand and grippy slickrock with occasional rock steps. The tread is straightforward, but edges are unforgiving—there are sheer drop‑offs and no railings at the viewpoint. On a clear day you’ll get a wide, layered panorama: river goosenecks far below, sculpted canyons, and distant high country on the horizon.

Scenery & What to Look For

This is classic Canyonlands geology on full display—entrenched river meanders carved over millions of years into stacked sandstone and siltstone with the resistant White Rim layer standing out below. Keep an eye out for hardy desert shrubs, juniper, and pinyon clinging to cracks, and you may spot ravens riding thermals. At dawn or dusk, it’s not unusual to catch bighorn or deer moving along the mesa top.

Best Time to Hike

Spring and fall bring the friendliest temps and the clearest air. Summer is scorching and fully exposed—go early or late for comfort and better photos when canyon walls glow. Winter can be lovely and quiet, but slickrock may hold icy patches after storms.

Tips & Bottom Line

This is a quick, high‑reward stroll if you want big scenery without a big effort. It’s also a nice alternative when Mesa Arch and Grand View Point feel crowded. Bring sun protection and water—there’s no shade and no reliable water on the route. Footing is easy overall, but mind the edges and keep kids close near the overlook.

Pets are not allowed on this trail. No permit is required for day hiking. Surfaces are uneven and rocky, so this route isn’t wheelchair accessible.
