Trail guide
Le vieux chemin du Cap-Rouge is a 9 km (5.6 mi) out-and-back along a section of the old Cabot Trail. Start on the Cabot Trail across from Mkwesaqtuk / Cap-Rouge Campground, follow the gentle climb to a ridge on Jerome Mountain, then return from the final look-off by the same route. Allow about three hours. It is a longer but easy walk for people who want coastal views and the area's Acadian history without a steep summit climb.
This route follows the historic road through Cap-Rouge. Remains of an old school and former residents' houses, along with the old wharf at La Bloc, mark the settlement that once stood here. They are part of the walk rather than separate destinations, so take your time as you pass them.
The final look-off faces Presqu'île and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. An exhibit there tells more about the families who lived in Cap-Rouge. The coast is in view along the route too, so look out through the openings on the way up instead of saving all your attention for the end.
An older account describes a 6 km route between Le Buttereau and Trout Brook. Those endpoints and that distance do not match this campground-to-look-off return walk. This entry follows the current 9 km out-and-back version; do not combine the older figure with this route.
The trailhead is on the Cabot Trail opposite Mkwesaqtuk / Cap-Rouge Campground. Parking arrangements and capacity are not specified, so do not assume campground parking or services are available to hikers. No water stop is documented along the route; carry water for the full return. Dogs may join the hike but must stay on leash. Published time estimates range from 2 to 3.5 hours, so three hours is a sensible plan before longer stops.
