Overview
Set above Bechers Bay on Santa Rosa Island, Vail and Vickers Ranch is the island’s historic cattle-ranch complex—once the last working island cattle ranch in the continental U.S. Ranching here ended in 1998 after nearly a century, following the National Park Service’s acquisition of the island in 1986. The result is a remarkably intact historic landscape that feels frozen in time.
Four generations of the Vail & Vickers family ran cattle here using vaquero traditions, shaping an undeveloped ranch landscape that’s rare on the California coast. Because everything had to move by sea, boats were integral to operations—part of what made this ranching life so distinctive among American ranches.

Guide
You’ll wander the grounds around a cluster of historic ranch buildings—think bunkhouse, barn, corrals, and support structures—viewed from the outside. Interiors are generally closed, opening only on occasional escorted tours. The main ranch lawn is open for picnicking and soaking in those wide Bechers Bay views.
Around the ranch you’ll find open grasslands and coastal habitat that support a variety of birds and small critters. It’s not a wildlife hot spot on its own, but the surrounding landscape is alive—give it time and keep your distance.
Expect minimal amenities. There’s no store, food, or water here, and buildings remain closed unless you’re on a guided visit. Follow posted guidance to minimize disturbance to wildlife and historic resources.
