This is a paved, multi‑use greenway that locals often call Hemlock Creek Trail. It links the Independence/Valley View side of the valley to the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath at Stone Road. Figure on 3.3 miles total out‑and‑back, with a smooth 10‑foot‑wide surface and benches along the way. It’s not a wilderness ramble—it’s a smart connector with legit scenery and a memorable river crossing.
The route follows Hemlock Creek through a wooded corridor, crossing the creek multiple times before spanning the Cuyahoga River on a signature ~200‑foot pedestrian bridge. You’ll pass historic remnants of old Hemlock/Stone Road and the former Terraced Lakes estate, a landscape shaped by early quarrying and mining. Expect creek and river views peeking through the trees, plus deeper vistas from the big bridge.
Most people consider it easy overall, but there’s real grade on the valley side. Heading from the Independence end toward the Towpath, the trail drops roughly a couple hundred feet over the first 1.5 miles, with a short half‑mile that hits about 7–11% grade. Translation: whichever way you start, you’ll pay for it once—either up front or on the way back. Cyclists should manage speed on the downhills, especially near bridges and benches. Total time for the 3.3‑mile out‑and‑back is about 1 hour and 15 minutes at a casual pace.
Park at Elmwood Park (6200 Elmwood Ave, Independence) for restrooms and reliable access, or use the Cleveland Clinic Business Operations Center area (6801 Brecksville Rd) if signed and allowed. The eastern end meets the Towpath at Stone Road in Valley View, opening easy options for longer days on the flat canal path. Dogs are welcome on leash.
The upper (Independence) half is gentle and typically manageable for many users who need a smoother grade. The valley half is too steep for many wheelchair or stroller users—consider doing an out‑and‑back on the gentler portion only.
Open year‑round. It shines in autumn for color and feels pleasantly shaded in warm weather. Go early to beat both crowds and summer bugs, and to enjoy softer light over the river from the big bridge.
Yes—if you like a polished, short outing with real payoff: bridges, history, and a direct Towpath link. If you want dirt singletrack, look elsewhere. There’s also a similarly named Hemlock Loop Trail nearby in a different park system; that one’s a natural‑surface loop and not this paved connector.
Primary parking at Elmwood Park (6200 Elmwood Ave, Independence) with restrooms; additional signed access at Cleveland Clinic Business Operations Center (6801 Brecksville Rd). Eastern end meets the Towpath at Stone Rd in Valley View.
Short but steep grades on the valley side (up to ~11%); manage bike speed on downhills and save energy for the return climb. The southern half is too steep for many wheelchair/stroller users.
