Parking

Use the parking at Harriet Keeler Picnic Area off Chippewa Creek Drive, then follow the All Purpose Trail to the Gorge Loop junction. The access leg is outside the 0.3-mile loop. Do not navigate to the separate Chippewa Creek Gorge Overlook trailhead; it serves Hemlock and All Purpose trails.

Safety

The two large stone staircases descend nearly 100 feet into the gorge; the loop then climbs back to its junction on steep, uneven terrain. Creekside rocks may be slick, especially after rain. The published pet rule clearly covers leashed dogs on the All Purpose Trail but does not clearly establish access on Gorge Loop; confirm before bringing a dog.

Join the All Purpose Trail along Chippewa Creek Drive near Harriet Keeler Picnic Area, then take the Gorge Loop at its junction. The access leg from parking is separate from the 0.3-mile loop. The nearby Chippewa Creek Gorge Overlook trailhead serves Hemlock and All Purpose trails; it is not the Gorge Loop entrance. There is no food or drinking-water service on the loop.

The route begins in ridge-top oak-hickory woods, then drops on two substantial stone staircases to the creek. At the bottom, the walk reaches water and large sandstone boulders before climbing back to the same junction. It's a quick, close-up gorge visit rather than a long creekside hike. After rain, the creek can run faster; the steep steps and creekside rocks call for care. For a photo, keep a boulder in the foreground and let the stream lead the eye into the wooded gorge.

The rock and the stoneworkGlaciers left this gorge in the landscape, and Chippewa Creek keeps reshaping it.

Glaciers left this gorge in the landscape, and Chippewa Creek keeps reshaping it. Berea Sandstone forms the upper rock layer; as it breaks away, large boulders tumble into the creek. Cleveland Metroparks built the natural-surface route with locally sourced stone. Its hand-built staircases and overlooks use techniques inspired by the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration.
