Overview
Thornton Beach is a broad sandy shore between Diwan and Cape Tribulation, where rainforest meets the Coral Sea. I'd stop for a walk, not just a look from the car: the best view opens on foot, and visitors often describe the beach as roomy and quiet. If you're driving the coast, this is an easy place to slow down.

Guide
Follow the beach south toward Cooper Creek's mouth. The lower ranges of Thornton Peak come into view along the way. This is a beach wander rather than a marked path, so turn back wherever it suits.
Struck Island sits just offshore and covers about one hectare. It gives you a clear focal point against the open sea. Get out onto the sand and frame the small island with some beach in the foreground.
There's unpaved beachside parking, picnic tables, public toilets behind Thornton's, and a beachfront restaurant and bar. From the south, reach the beach via the Daintree ferry and Cape Tribulation Road. The road is narrow and winding; conventional 2WD access is possible, but high clearance helps and caravans aren't recommended.
Queensland Parks warns that crocodiles may use coastal water and estuaries, and says never swim where crocodiles may live. Marine stingers can occur year-round, especially in warmer months. Enjoy the shore from the sand and leave the water alone.
