Overview

About Cwm Idwal

Why stop

  • Dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and lake reflections in one short circuit
  • Rare arctic-alpine plants reward a slower look at the rocks

Heads up

  • Uneven, rocky paths become tiring in wet weather
  • Steep, loose-rock sections make the Devil’s Kitchen option demanding
Cwm Idwal is a compact glacial amphitheatre wrapped around Llyn Idwal, with steep rock walls, waterfalls, boulder fields, and broad mountain views packed into a short outing. It is one of Eryri’s clearest places to see how ice shaped the landscape, and the lake gives the walk a strong visual focus from the first viewpoints.

Best time to go

Cwm Idwal was designated Wales’ first National Nature Reserve for its geology and its unusual plants. Look on rocky ledges for arctic-alpine species such as moss campion, purple saxifrage, and the rare Snowdon lily. In spring and summer, ring ouzels and wheatears may be seen around the crags. Give the plants room and stay on the established path, since many grow in fragile ledge habitat.

Spring and early summer bring the best chance of seeing the alpine flowers. Autumn adds warm colour to the slopes and often gives the lake strong reflections. Clear mornings usually offer the cleanest views before cloud builds over the ridges; quieter weekdays and early starts also make the popular path easier to enjoy.

Getting there and facilities

The trail begins at the Cwm Idwal visitor centre by the A5 at Ogwen, near Llyn Ogwen. Parking in the valley is limited and fills quickly on busy weekends and in summer. The T10 bus stops at Llyn Ogwen, about a minute’s walk from the trailhead, and the Bws Ogwen electric bus also serves the valley. The park authority lists EV charge points at the Ogwen Centre car park.

The visitor-centre area has 24-hour toilets, including an accessible toilet, free public Wi-Fi, an information room, and a seasonal kiosk serving hot and cold snacks. These facilities are at the valley trailhead, not around the lake itself. The full mountain route is uneven and is not suitable for wheelchairs or visitors who need a smooth, level path.

The official circular route is about 5 km with 140 m of ascent and normally takes around two hours. It is graded moderate. The path rises from the Ogwen valley to the lake, then continues over rocky and sometimes loose ground around the cwm. The higher option toward Twll Du, or Devil’s Kitchen, is steeper and involves large boulders. A shorter lower route avoids that ascent and is a better choice when the weather is poor or your group wants a gentler outing.

Wear walking boots and waterproof layers. Mountain weather can change quickly, and wet rock, wind, and low cloud can make the route feel much harder than the distance suggests. Leave extra time for photographs and for careful footing beside the lake.

Why stopThe rocks also carry a human story.

The rocks also carry a human story. Charles Darwin studied the area, and the exposed folds and faults make the geology unusually legible for a visitor without specialist equipment. This feels more distinctive than a standard lake walk because the landform itself is the attraction.
