Overview

About Sygun Copper Mine

Why stop

  • Mine exit opens onto a memorable mountain panorama

Heads up

  • Steep, wet metal stairs and a rough path test knees
Sygun is a preserved copper mine just outside Beddgelert, with a self-guided audio-visual walk through three levels of the old workings. The route moves through winding tunnels and larger chambers where mineral colours, old workings, stalactites, and stalagmites make the geology as interesting as the industrial story.

Before you go

Best time to go

Go early in the day or outside the busiest summer weekends if you want more time at the audio points and displays. The underground temperature barely changes with the weather, making this a useful wet-day stop, but the approach and return path can be especially slippery after rain. Late afternoon gives the best light on the exterior buildings and mountain view; inside, expect a deliberately dark, atmospheric experience.

The attraction follows a longstanding seasonal pattern, with broad spring-to-autumn opening and more limited winter dates. Check the current opening pattern before making a special trip, and remember that the final underground admission is before closing.

More about Sygun Copper Mine

What the visit feels likeAllow about 40 minutes for the underground tour, plus time for the surface path and visitor…

Allow about 40 minutes for the underground tour, plus time for the surface path and visitor centre. The total underground route is roughly 500 metres, but it is not a level stroll: expect steep metal staircases, wet and uneven floors, loose stones, dim lighting, and a few low passages where you need to duck. A hard hat is provided. The mine stays cool at about 9°C year-round, so bring a warm layer and wear waterproof footwear with a good grip.

The tour ends at the Victoria Level, followed by a steep, uneven mountain path back toward the visitor centre. If that descent or the stairs are beyond your group, the staff can explain the route options, but the attraction is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Dogs are allowed underground, though the open-grid staircases are a poor fit for many dogs.

History and settingCopper mining in the Nant Gwynant area reaches back to Roman times.

Copper mining in the Nant Gwynant area reaches back to Roman times. Sygun was being worked on an industrial scale by 1836, and two to three thousand tonnes of copper had been excavated from the rock by 1862. The mine closed in 1903 after most of the copper had been extracted, then reopened as an educational attraction in 1986. Water slowly working through the abandoned tunnels helped form the dripstone features seen today.

Why stopThis is more hands-on than a conventional museum.

This is more hands-on than a conventional museum. You climb up through the mountain, listen at commentary points, and finish high on the hillside with a broad view across the valley. The visitor centre adds a small museum, a gift shop, a café, and a picnic area, so the stop works well when you want some history without giving up the surrounding scenery.
