Before you go

Parking

Craflwyn National Trust car park, off the A498 before Beddgelert; the loop starts from the car park.

Best time to go

Late spring and early summer are hard to beat, when bluebells can be striking in the ffridd and the Cwm Llan waterfalls still carry good flow. Starting early gives softer light on the high heath and the lake, and a quieter walk on the Watkin Path section. This is conservation-managed landscape, with Welsh Black cattle and cotton grass part of the blanket bog country above.

Safety

Steep loose and wet ground, stiles, livestock, and a short A498 road section; carry a map and compass because the route is only partly waymarked.

Trail guide

Hiking Craflwyn, Hafod y Llan and Llyn Dinas Walk

How the route unfoldsFrom the Craflwyn-side access the path climbs through the ancient oak woodland of Coed Craflwyn…

From the Craflwyn-side access the path climbs through the ancient oak woodland of Coed Craflwyn and past the Giant's Chair, then breaks out onto open heath and ffridd at Bylchau Terfyn, where the views open toward Yr Aran, Moel Hebog and Dinas Emrys. The descent joins the Watkin Path beside the waterfalls and pools of Afon Cwm Llan, drops through the lower Hafod y Llan estate, then takes lanes and a track by Llyndy Isaf to the shore of Llyn Dinas. The final stretch follows the lake and the Glaslyn downstream past Sygun Copper Mine before the road back to Craflwyn.

Footing and difficultyThe climbing and descending are the real work here.

The climbing and descending are the real work here. Paths are steep, rocky and uneven in places, with loose stone, rocky steps, and wet or muddy sections after rain. There are several stiles and gates. Boots with grip and ankle support make a clear difference. The terrain is not step-free and is not suitable for pushchairs.

Wayfinding, road and livestockOnly part of the route is waymarked, so carry a map and compass and know how to use them.
  • Only part of the route is waymarked, so carry a map and compass and know how to use them.
  • There is a short stretch beside and crossing the A498, so stay alert with children and dogs.
  • Livestock are likely on the working farms and open ground. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leads around animals.
The honest tradeoffThis is a mountain-valley walk rather than a flat lakeside stroll.

This is a mountain-valley walk rather than a flat lakeside stroll. You pay in sustained climbing, rough footing and one road interlude, and you are repaid with waterfalls, old woodland, wide summit views and a long finish along Llyn Dinas. If you want easy, level walking, choose something else; if you want variety in one loop, this earns the time.
