Beddgelert Village and Gelert’s Grave

Overview

About Welsh Highland Railway

Why stop

  • A slow, scenic way to see Eryri without a mountain hike
  • Steam locomotives and Aberglaslyn scenery share one experience

Heads up

  • The full return is a long, scheduled commitment
  • Cloud, rain, and smoke can obscure the views
The most rewarding scenery comes as the train leaves the towns behind. Look for the mountain views around Rhyd Ddu, the forested approach to Beddgelert, and the dramatic combination of river, woodland, and steep rock in the Aberglaslyn Pass. Beddgelert is a useful break point for a village wander, while the Pont Croesor area connects with the Glaslyn valley and its wildlife attractions. Cloud and rain can hide the big views, but they also make the pass and wooded sections feel atmospheric.

Access and best conditions

Main stations provide toilets, and the trains have small onboard toilets, but there is no wheelchair-accessible toilet onboard. Wheelchair bays and accessible seating are available in some carriages; arrangements vary by station and service, so contact the railway in advance if you need them. Parking is available near the main termini, while intermediate stations and request halts are less practical for spontaneous boarding.

Clear weather gives the longest mountain views. A weekday or shoulder-season trip is usually calmer than the busiest summer departures, and morning or late-afternoon light is kinder for photographs through the carriage windows. Leave some flexibility for weather: mist, rain, and steam can all reduce visibility, and the full return takes long enough that conditions may change several times.

“You're approaching Beddgelert, a slate-roofed village where the Colwyn and Glaslyn rivers meet. I'd stop for the short riverside walk to Gelert's Grave; allow about an hour for the loop.”

More about Welsh Highland Railway

Why rideThe Welsh Highland Railway is a 25-mile narrow-gauge heritage railway linking Caernarfon with…

The Welsh Highland Railway is a 25-mile narrow-gauge heritage railway linking Caernarfon with Porthmadog. It runs from beneath Caernarfon Castle into the western foothills of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), through Beddgelert and the Aberglaslyn Pass, then back toward the coast. The line is the main attraction, not just the train: it lets you see mountain country, woodland, farmland, rivers, and open coastal flats without committing to a strenuous walk.

The original railway was built for the slate and local industries, closed to passengers in the 1930s, and was rebuilt in stages by preservationists. The final link to Porthmadog reopened in 2011. Today, powerful steam locomotives and broad-windowed carriages make the old route a particularly memorable way to connect several parts of Eryri in one day.

Plan the outingUse the Beddgelert station area as the map point for this entry.

Use the Beddgelert station area as the map point for this entry. You can also board at Caernarfon, with the castle beside the station, or at Porthmadog Harbour, where the line connects with the Ffestiniog Railway. The complete return is a substantial, scheduled outing rather than a quick stop. Shorter journeys can make more sense if you mainly want the Beddgelert and Aberglaslyn scenery.

Book ahead for popular departures and arrive early enough to find the right platform. Carry a waterproof layer, keep a camera ready for the curves and bridges, and bring binoculars if you want to watch the open valley and estuary sections. Some services offer a refreshment trolley and Welsh tea, but do not plan on every departure having the same onboard service.
