Before you go

Best time to go

Go on a weekday morning or later in the afternoon for the calmest feel. Beddgelert is a popular base for walkers and a busy holiday stop, so the short path can feel much less peaceful on summer weekends and public holidays. Early or late light is also kinder to the pale stone, tree, and surrounding hills than hard midday sun.

Wear shoes with some grip and bring a waterproof layer. The riverside meadow and path are exposed to Welsh weather, and the walk is more enjoyable when you can linger instead of rushing back to the village.

Walk and access

The signed circular route is about 1 mile (1.6 km) and usually takes roughly 40 minutes to an hour, depending on how long you spend at the memorial and along the river. The main riverside path is described as suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, with a ramp and a defined path, although rough surfaces and wet weather can make it less comfortable than the distance suggests.

Dogs are welcome, but keep them under control and on a lead around livestock. There is no National Trust car park in Beddgelert itself. Use the village's public paid parking and walk from the centre; public toilets, cafés, shops, and other useful facilities are in the village rather than at the grave.

“You're approaching Beddgelert, a slate-roofed village where the Colwyn and Glaslyn rivers meet. I'd stop for the short riverside walk to Gelert's Grave; allow about an hour for the loop.”

Bedd Gelert is a small stone memorial in a meadow beside the Afon Glaslyn, reached by a short riverside walk south of Beddgelert. The setting does most of the work: a fenced grave, an old tree, open grassland, and steep Welsh hills make this feel more atmospheric than the monument itself suggests on a map.

The walk is worth doing even if you are only mildly interested in the story. It gives you a quiet look at the Glaslyn valley and a gentle change of pace from the busier village streets. Follow the riverside path rather than treating the grave as a drive-up stop.

The traditional tale says that Prince Llywelyn the Great returned from hunting to find his hound Gelert smeared with blood. Believing the dog had killed his baby son, he struck Gelert down, then discovered the child safe and a wolf dead nearby. The story says the remorseful prince buried the faithful hound here, giving Beddgelert its name.

Treat that as folklore, not a documented medieval event. The story was attached to this village as a tourist legend in the late 18th century. That bit of myth-making is part of the place's character, and the real attraction is the combination of memory, river, meadow, and mountain scenery.
