Beddgelert Village and Gelert’s Grave

Overview

About Beddgelert

Why stop

  • Riverside paths and an easy short loop
  • Stone bridge, slate buildings, and mountain backdrop

Heads up

  • Crowded on sunny weekends
Beddgelert is a compact stone-built village where the Afon Colwyn meets the River Glaslyn, with wooded hills rising straight from the valley. The centre is easy to explore on foot: look for slate-roofed buildings, the stone bridge, riverbanks and mountain views. It is a place to linger over a short walk, a meal, or a pause between bigger Eryri outings.

Before you go

Best time to go

Aim for an early weekday morning or later afternoon on a pleasant day if you want a quieter river walk and softer light on the stone buildings. Sunny weekends and school holidays are the busy periods, and the compact centre can feel crowded. Spring through early autumn usually gives the best combination of longer daylight and greener riverside scenery; winter is quieter but wetter, darker and more slippery. Start any longer walk early, allow weather time, and do not mistake the village’s easy stroll for the more demanding routes that leave it.

More about Beddgelert

Walks and practicalitiesFor a gentle outing, follow Gelert’s Trail along the river.

For a gentle outing, follow Gelert’s Trail along the river. The short loop is mostly level and paved; some of the riverside path has been made more accessible. The village also starts longer routes: the Fisherman’s Path is a 10 km circular walk graded hard/strenuous, with steep hills, rough ground and navigation required. Bring proper walking shoes, a waterproof layer and a map or offline route for anything beyond the village stroll.

There are two main village car parks, public toilets, and an information centre. The public toilets are open year-round and include an accessible facility that requires a RADAR key. The village has cafés, food stops and shops, so it works well as a resupply or meal break between walks.

Why stopThe village’s name is tied to the Welsh legend of Gelert, Llywelyn Fawr’s faithful hound.

The village’s name is tied to the Welsh legend of Gelert, Llywelyn Fawr’s faithful hound. A short riverside walk leads to the memorial known as Gelert’s Grave. Treat the story as local folklore, but it adds a sense of place that you will not get from an ordinary mountain village.
