Marian Falls Track

This is the opening section of the Lake Marian Track, but it stands on its own as a rewarding mini-adventure. From the Lake Marian carpark on Hollyford Road (off SH94/Milford Road), you cross a swing bridge over the Hollyford River and wander through lush, mossy Fiordland rainforest to a dedicated viewing platform for Marian Falls.

The walk is short, easy, and well-graded—ideal for families and anyone needing a leg-stretcher on the Milford drive. Expect about 0.45 miles total (return) to the falls, reached in roughly 10 minutes from the trailhead. Plan 20–30 minutes return including photo time. The cascades are especially photogenic after rain, when the water thunders through the beech forest and every surface glows green.

Do keep it sensible near the creek: the rocks are extremely slippery and the water is swift—accidents have happened. Stay on the track and supervise kids closely at the falls. Fiordland is famously wet (think mud and slick roots), so wear grippy, waterproof footwear even for this short outing.

If you’re short on time, this is a high‑value stop: rainforest, a swing bridge, and roaring cascades for minimal effort. If you want more, continue beyond the falls on the much steeper, longer Lake Marian Track to the alpine lake—just know that’s a different level of challenge.

Best time to hike

Open year‑round. Summer through early autumn (Dec–Apr) is warmer and pleasant, but the falls look fantastic after rain in any season. Parking can fill during peak season and mornings; aim for early or late in the day for an easier spot and softer light.
