Overview

A roaring set of short waterfalls and rapids on Marian Creek, Marian Cascade is the first highlight on the Lake Marian Track. From the car park, you cross a swing bridge over the Hollyford River and stroll through lush beech forest to a viewing gantry beside the thundering creek.

What You'll See

Expect powerful, crystal-clear water gushing over big boulders in a steep-sided forested gorge. It’s especially dramatic after rain and makes an easy, photogenic stop even if you’re not hiking to Lake Marian.

Getting There & Time

Start at the Lake Marian car park off Lower Hollyford Road. Cross the suspension bridge and follow the track along Marian Creek—it's about 7–10 minutes to the cascades, around 20 minutes return if you’re only visiting the falls. The track becomes rougher and rockier immediately after the viewing platform if you continue toward Lake Marian.

Amenities

Parking is at the Lake Marian car park, and there is a basic toilet there. There are no facilities at the falls themselves—no food, water, or WiFi.

Safety & Trail Notes

The rocks near the creek are slick and dangerous; enjoy the view from the gantry and marked track. Fiordland gets a lot of rain, so bring a waterproof layer and expect mud. Ongaonga (stinging nettle) grows beside parts of the track—avoid brushing vegetation.

Wildlife & Forest

Keep an eye out for native forest birds like fantails and robins flitting through the beech canopy, plus abundant mosses and ferns. Sandflies are common—come prepared.

Best Time to Visit

  • Light: Early morning or late afternoon gives softer light in the shaded gorge.
  • Flow: The cascades pop after rain.
  • Crowds: It’s a quick stop that’s rarely packed; weekdays and early mornings are the quietest.

Pros

  • Easy 7–10 minute walk from the Lake Marian car park
  • Photogenic boulder-strewn cascades with a sturdy viewing platform
  • Scenic swing bridge over the Hollyford River at the start

Cons

  • Sandflies can be relentless near the water
  • Rocks and edges are slippery—stay on the track

Tips

  • Bring strong insect repellent—sandflies are active by the water.
  • Visit after rain for the most dramatic flow and sound.
  • Use the viewing gantry; don’t climb onto wet rocks or approach the edge.
  • Wear long pants to avoid ongaonga (stinging nettle) along the track.
  • If you have time, continue past the falls toward Lake Marian for bigger views.
