Sacred Dancing Cascade

Sacred Dancing Cascade is a broad, low waterfall on McDonald Creek, just off Going-to-the-Sun Road near Lake McDonald. A short path from a small roadside pullout reaches the footbridge, which looks upstream over a wide, stair-stepped rock ledge. Stop if you want creek and rock detail without a longer walk; the cascade is wide and modest in height rather than a tall plunge.

The pullout has limited room and can be busy, so treat this as a flexible pause on the west-side drive rather than counting on a parking space. The bridge gives the cleanest view, and you can take in the full width without scrambling down to the creek.

The water spreads across low rock shelves and tumbles into a rocky channel. From the bridge, aim upstream with the whole ledge in frame; include some of the water below it to show the cascade's width. Evergreen forest and mountain slopes set the scene around the creek. Clear water and layered rock are the draw, more than a high drop.

The winter approach is a 5.3-mile cross-country ski round trip, with about a mile following McDonald Creek's west bank. That turns the roadside stop into a snowy outing; check current route and snow conditions before setting out.

“Sacred Dancing” is also given as a Kootenai name for Lake McDonald, believed to refer to ceremonies at the lake's foot. That history belongs to the lake and does not establish this cascade as a ceremonial place. Lake McDonald's present name is commonly linked to trader Duncan McDonald, who carved his name on a nearby tree in 1878.
