Guide
East Tunnel is a 408-foot tunnel through Piegan Mountain on Going-to-the-Sun Road, just east of Logan Pass. The road disappears into a dark opening in the cliff, then curves back into the open valley. It is a quick engineering landmark you experience from your vehicle, not a separate walk.
Carving the tunnel was one of the hardest challenges in building Going-to-the-Sun Road. The rock around the portal makes the scale of that work easy to see. From the east approach, the opening frames Clements Mountain across the valley.
Take in the tunnel as part of the drive. Do not stop or walk in the tunnel or roadway for photos; use only a signed, designated pullout if you want to take in the view. This alpine stretch closes seasonally, so check road access before planning around it.
