Beehive Falls: A Ferny Creek Walk

Overview

About Beehive Falls

Why stop

  • Fern-fringed pools and red rock make excellent close-up photos

Heads up

  • Seasonal flow can dwindle to a trickle in dry weather
  • Final rock steps and uneven ground complicate the last approach
Beehive Falls is a seasonal waterfall on Mud Hut Creek in the northern Grampians. The 25-metre cascade drops through red sandstone into a shallow pool, with fern-lined rocks making the finish feel unexpectedly lush. It is a more intimate, creekside stop than the park's larger showpiece falls, and the scenery changes noticeably with rainfall.

Before you go

Best time to go

This is a rainfall-dependent stop. Come after good rain, especially in winter or spring, when the cascade, pool, and surrounding ferns are most rewarding. In dry spells the flow can shrink to a trickle or disappear. Spring also brings wildflowers along the approach.

Start early on weekends and holidays if you want the best chance of a quiet walk and space in the car park. Morning gives softer light in the creek gully; late afternoon can also work, but allow enough daylight for the return. Rocks around the falls can be wet and slippery, so slow down at the final steps and check park access conditions before driving out from Halls Gap.

More about Beehive Falls

What to expectThe walk starts at Beehive Falls Carpark on Roses Gap Road, about 25 minutes north of Halls…

The walk starts at Beehive Falls Carpark on Roses Gap Road, about 25 minutes north of Halls Gap, and follows a gently undulating track beside the creek for about 2.8 km return. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours if you want time at the falls. The final approach uses rock steps and uneven ground, with a little scrambling around the base, so sturdy shoes help and the last section is not a smooth accessible path.

Bring water and food. There are no toilet or picnic facilities at the falls precinct. Dogs are not permitted on this walk or in the national park.
