Overview

About Lower Waterfalls of Gar

Why stop

  • Several cascades packed into a short walk
  • Red sandstone shelves make strong waterfall photos

Heads up

  • Flow can fade quickly between rains
  • Steep, slippery sections and exposed edges demand care
This is a short, worthwhile detour for a close look at seasonal water in the northern Grampians. The Gar Waterfalls Walk follows the creek to a series of cascades spilling over broad, red-brown sandstone ledges, with rocky lookouts opening toward the Mount Difficult escarpment. It feels more like a rough creek walk than a polished viewpoint, which is part of the appeal.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

The falls are seasonal and best after rain, with the strongest show usually in the cooler, wetter part of the year. In dry weather, you may find only thin trickles, so check the forecast and set expectations accordingly. Overcast light is kind to the wet sandstone and moving water; bring sturdy shoes, water, and a warm layer, and allow extra time if the rocks are slick.

More about Lower Waterfalls of Gar

The walkStart at Troopers Creek Campground and allow about 4.2 km return and 2 hours.

Start at Troopers Creek Campground and allow about 4.2 km return and 2 hours. Parks Victoria rates it Grade 3, medium. Expect steep sections, steep rock steps, creek crossings, slippery rock and exposed cliff edges. The track steadily climbs the lower mountain flank, so the distance is modest but the footing is not a casual stroll.

Useful to knowThere are no verified visitor facilities at the cascades themselves.

There are no verified visitor facilities at the cascades themselves. Troopers Creek Campground, the access point, has pit toilets, picnic tables, shared fireplaces and BBQ hotplates. Woodland birds are common around its eucalypts and heathy shrubland, so keep an ear out as you set off. Stay on the marked track, take care near exposed edges, and do not treat the wet rock shelves as a place for casual scrambling.
