Hiking The Fortress Walk

The short versionThis is a demanding return walk from Victoria Range Road, about 6.

This is a demanding return walk from Victoria Range Road, about 6.5 km in total and roughly three hours for a fit walker. It is Australian Grade 4: steep, rough and uneven, with scrambling near the upper rocks. This is for experienced hikers comfortable with a hard climb, not a casual lookout stroll.

What the walk is likeThe track climbs steadily from the small roadside access through dry bush toward weathered…

The track climbs steadily from the small roadside access through dry bush toward weathered cliffs, caves and the distinctive sandstone towers of The Fortress. The mapped route makes a rough circuit around the upper formation before returning to the access, so the distance here is the full walked return rather than a straight-line estimate. The rock formations are the payoff, with broad views over the surrounding ranges from the high ground.

Effort and footingExpect steep sections, uneven ground, rough rock and slippery surfaces.

Expect steep sections, uneven ground, rough rock and slippery surfaces. The final approach to the upper formation includes scrambling and requires careful hand and foot placement. Wet weather makes the rocks more hazardous; sturdy footwear and a conservative turnaround decision matter more here than pace.

Access and rulesThe primary access is a small car park on Victoria Range Road.

The primary access is a small car park on Victoria Range Road. The approach is gravel and four-wheel-drive access is noted, so plan for a rougher road than a standard sealed park approach. Dogs are not allowed, while assistance dogs have separate entry requirements. Fires, horses, generators, bicycles and firearms are also prohibited.
