Hermits Rest is a historic stone-and-timber rest stop tucked into a low mound at the end of Hermit Road. I’d get off the shuttle for Mary Colter’s rustic cabin and its enormous arched fireplace; the canyon outlook is a nice finish, though some of the earlier overlooks along the road give you a broader panorama. There’s a gift shop and snack bar inside, so this works well as a pause at the end of the drive rather than a stop for the view alone.

The free Red Route shuttle serves Hermit Road from March 1 through November 30, when private vehicles are kept off the road. In winter, vehicles under 22 feet can drive it. You can also arrive on foot or by bicycle; the Canyon Rim Trail is about 7.1 miles from the Village. A useful way around the Village transfer is to board at Trailview Overlook after the 0.7-mile uphill paved walk there. Check the current shuttle schedule before setting out, since weather can interrupt service.

The Fred Harvey Company commissioned Hermits Rest in 1914, when horse-drawn carriages brought visitors along the rim. Colter made the building look like a frontier cabin, with local-looking stone, heavy timber and an earthen mound that tucks it into the slope. The “hermit” in the name points to Louis Boucher, an early Euro-American settler associated with Hermit Creek; Hermits Rest was built as a visitor rest stop, not his home.

The large arched alcove fireplace is the main event inside. Colter rubbed soot into the stones and chose antique furnishings to make the room feel used over time; there’s a second, smaller stone fireplace in the curio shop. At the entrance, look for the stone arch and hanging bell: the old path once ran under the arch, and Colter brought the bell from a Spanish mission. The path was later moved to keep the bell from being damaged.

The snack bar is for a quick bite: sandwiches, chips, ice cream, hot chocolate and the signature cookies. It’s a snack stop, not a sit-down restaurant. Public vault/composting toilets and a bottle-filling station are outside behind the building; picnic tables and benches make it easy to rest before heading back. The gift shop and snack bar are in the main building.

Save time for the westward viewThe canyon is west-facing here, so late light is a draw, but sunset stops can get busy.

The canyon is west-facing here, so late light is a draw, but sunset stops can get busy. For a photo that feels specific to Hermits Rest, frame the stone-and-timber porch or the old bell arch with the canyon beyond rather than taking another canyon-wide shot. If you’re short on time, make the building and fireplace the reason to stop and choose an earlier overlook for your biggest panorama.
