Tapeats Creek Trail

Tapeats Creek Trail is a 2.2-mile one-way point-to-point route from Upper Tapeats Camp (AW7) to Lower Tapeats (AW8), where the creek reaches the Colorado River. It follows a narrow inner-canyon corridor between two designated camps, so this is a segment of a backcountry itinerary, not a day hike from a roadside trailhead. Allow about two to three hours for rough footing, two creek crossings, and the downclimb near the lower one. Reaching the start takes a separate approach: Indian Hollow via the Thunder River Trail is longer and gentler; the Bill Hall route from Monument Point is shorter but steep and includes a 15-foot scramble. A permit is required if you camp overnight at either site.

From Upper Tapeats, cross to the east bank just below camp or about half a mile downcanyon. Follow the creek for roughly two miles, then cross back to the west bank before Lower Tapeats. An 8-foot downclimb sits above the lower crossing; a short rope can help lower packs. Snowmelt and heavy rain can make the crossings impossible. High flows are more likely after spring warming begins in mid-March and often peak in May. A seldom-used route stays on the west bank during floods, but it is narrow and exposed, and should be a last resort. Check current conditions before committing to the crossing.

Upper Tapeats Camp lies below the confluence of Thunder River and Tapeats Creek. After the hot, dry approach through Surprise Valley, the permanent creek and its green riparian corridor feel like a different canyon. The spring-fed water is a natural source, so filter or treat it before drinking. For a photo, put the creek in the foreground and let the green banks sit against the bare, layered canyon walls; that contrast is what makes this stretch recognizable.

The route ends at the designated Lower Tapeats campsite on the creek’s west side, close to the Colorado River. It has no toilet. Look for the campsite marker and use the designated site. Pets are not allowed below the canyon rim.
