Astronomy Amphitheater

Astronomy Amphitheater is an outdoor venue below the Lehman Caves Visitor Center, built for ranger astronomy programs. A typical session is about two hours: a 30-minute talk, then 90 minutes looking through telescopes at planets, star clusters, satellites, meteors and other deep-sky sights. Programs are free and don't need reservations, but capacity is limited and the visitor-center lots can fill on program nights. If you want a guided introduction to the sky, this is a good evening stop; you can stargaze from almost anywhere in the park without attending a program.

Summer is the main program season, with fewer weekly dates after the September Astronomy Festival and into October. Start times shift with sunset, so check the calendar before planning a night around it. Heavy clouds can spoil telescope viewing, and rain or lightning close to the start can cancel a program. For darker skies, aim for a clear night near the new moon or when the moon is below the horizon; give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust.

The amphitheater is in the Lehman Caves Visitor Center picnic area. It has permanent benches, wheelchair spaces beside them, accessible picnic tables and accessible restrooms by the parking area. The route and seating area are dirt, so rain or snow can leave them rough or rutted. Accessible parking is available for passenger vehicles and some smaller RVs; ask a ranger if you need a space. Running water is seasonal and is generally available in summer. White lights aren't allowed in the amphitheater after sundown, so use red light. Pets aren't allowed at programs; service animals are.

Great Basin became a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park in 2016. Its remote location, elevation, dry air and low light pollution help make the night sky part of the park's appeal, not just a backdrop for the ranger talk. On a clear, moonless summer night, the Milky Way, bright planets and distant star clusters may all be visible.

The Great Basin Observatory is a different site from the amphitheater. It's a research facility in an area closed to the public, with only limited tours during the annual Astronomy Festival. The observatory saw first light in 2016; its research includes exoplanets, double stars and stellar systems.
