Overview
Tucked along a babbling stretch of Lehman Creek at about 7,300 feet, this is the cozy, low-key basecamp near the start of the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive. Expect a truly small campground with shady, well-spaced sites under white fir, pinyon, juniper, and aspen—quiet nights, cool temps, and the sound of water are the draw here.
Campsites & Amenities
Each site has a picnic table and fire ring/grill, plus clean vault toilets and trash service. Several pads are large, paved pull-throughs suitable for RVs and trailers (up to about 40 feet); there are no hookups. There is no potable water in the campground—plan ahead.
Water, Dump, and Paying
Fill drinking water and use the RV dump station a short drive down the road near the Lehman Caves Visitor Center (seasonal; fee applies). Bring a way to pay at the campground pay station; don’t count on cell service for mobile payments.
How it operates
It’s first-come, first-served, and with so few sites, it does fill quickly on weekends and holidays. Generator hours run 8 a.m.–8 p.m., and quiet hours are 8 p.m.–8 a.m. Pets must be leashed and are limited to roads and paved areas. Fire rules change with conditions—check current restrictions before you strike a match.
Setting, Seasons, and Dark Skies
The riparian setting means shade and birdsong by day and star-splashed skies by night. This campground is often the park’s winter option when others close, but seasonal closures and changes do occur—always verify status before you roll.
Nearby: what makes the location great
You’re minutes from Lehman Caves tours and right on the road to the higher trailheads for the Bristlecone Pines, Alpine Lakes, and Wheeler Peak summit. Summer astronomy programs at the visitor center and overall stargazing are standout perks here.
Wildlife
The creek corridor is a pleasant spot for casual bird-watching and the occasional wildlife sighting—bring binoculars and keep dawn and dusk in mind for activity.
Best time to visit
- Spring–Fall: Arrive by late morning Thursday–Sunday to snag a site; weekdays are easier. Early and late season are blissfully quiet but chilly at night.
- Summer: Cool nights and easy access to high-country hikes; expect more competition for sites.
- Winter: Quietest experience if open—pack serious cold-weather gear.
- Night photography: New moon nights deliver superb Milky Way viewing right from camp.
Backup plan
If it’s full, have Upper Lehman, Baker Creek, Grey Cliffs, or (for smaller rigs) Wheeler Peak Campground on your shortlist.
