Lehman Creek Trail

Lehman Creek Trail is a 6.4-mile out-and-back from Upper Lehman Creek Campground to Wheeler Peak Campground and the Bristlecone Trailhead, then back the same way. Expect about 2,040 feet of climbing from the 7,750-foot start to just under 10,000 feet, and allow 3–6 hours. A one-way hike ends at the upper campground, so arrange a ride back if you do not want to retrace the route.

The lower stretch climbs through pinyon-juniper and shaded ground along Lehman Creek, with water birch in the riparian corridor. A signed junction by Oceola Ditch is a useful landmark; it lies about 2.7 miles from the Wheeler Peak end. The creek gives the lower half much of its character, but there is no potable water along the Scenic Drive, so bring what you need.

Higher up, the trail passes dense aspen groves with Douglas fir and subalpine pine, then reaches meadows and open views toward Wheeler Peak. Spring and summer bring wildflowers; early autumn turns the aspens yellow and orange. The leaf-covered tread winding between white trunks is the best photo opportunity along the route.

The long uphill stretch is more demanding than the mileage suggests, especially near 10,000 feet. Altitude sickness and afternoon thunderstorms are the main hazards. Pit toilets without running water are at the starting campground. When snow closes Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, use the designated pullout across from the campground; the trail is also used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Pets are prohibited on park trails; trained service animals are allowed.
