Rhodes Cabin is a one-room log cabin beside the Lehman Caves Visitor Center. It now holds exhibits about the people who made early visits to the cave possible, so it’s an easy history stop while you’re already at the center. It’s Stop 1 on the Mountain View Nature Trail walk. Cave tours leave from the visitor center, which also has the Great Basin Cafe, a park store, public restrooms and a water spigot. NPS says the cabin contains exhibits but doesn’t say whether visitors can go inside; ask at the center before counting on an interior visit.
Clarence and Bea Rhodes built the cabin in the 1920s while serving as Forest Service custodians of Lehman Caves. Reaching the cave once took several days from other settlements, and cabins gave visitors a place to stay. After the cave became a national monument in 1922, the Rhodes cabin housed the family appointed to care for it.
The cabin measures 19 by 11 feet. It has been moved from its original location, restored, and set on a concrete foundation. Its original roof was plank and sod laid over log beams, and its floor was dirt. The cabin was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 for its connection to Lehman Caves’ early tourist trade.
